Great Yoga in Grand Rapids

In an attempt to shake off the lethargic cocoon that seems to envelop me when I go home to Michigan for a visit, I attended two fabulous classes at Seva Yoga in East Grand Rapids.

This studio feels like a sister to us... similar color scheme, small intimate classes, passionate teachers...

The 23rd was an early morning class with Brooke. It's amazing how much easier it is to make it to class in the morning when it's just a 15min car ride away, instead of walking to/waiting for/riding on/walking from the bus!

Brooke's flow was very sweet and most fun of all was Pincha Mayurasana (forearm balance) with partners in the center of the room. This is a pose I've been working on sloooowly at the wall. Overcoming fear is even more key than building the strength.

When Brooke said we would be kicking up into the pose with the assistance of a partner, I thought there was no way. But to humor the teacher, or my partner, or myself (not sure which), I placed my forearms, fixed my gaze at the floor between my hands, lifted my hips, and stretched my legs into the air. And I felt free. And the pose was ease-ful. And I was so gleeful.

So now that the fear quotient is taken care of, next is alignment & balance so I can move beyond the partner stage. Thank you, Brooke!

Saturday was a donation-based class with the owner, Michele. Her class was a dynamic flow that linked the poses together into a playful sequence. I worked up a good sweat, which was exactly what was needed after a day of eating and eating and eating. Thank you, Michele!

Moral of the story... if you ever find yourself in the Greater Grand Rapids area, be sure to check out a class at Seva!
